“Eighty-Two to Ancestral Hometown Fire Alarm, advise responding units I can confirm smoke showing on Near Horizon Mountain. It looks like it’s somewhere on the northeast shoulder.” “Received Eighty-Two. Fire Alarm to all AHFD units, Rescue 82 confirms smoke showing at that location.” My sister lowered her binoculars. Even without their aid, the column ofContinue reading “Funny thing about firemen. . .”
“Humor me,” I said to Partner du Jour as I pulled a U-turn in the ambulance. I pulled up at an angle, blocking the breakdown lane and right lane of the four-lane road. I activated the primary strobes, grabbed a pair of gloves, and stepped out. Fluffy lay with his head on the fogContinue reading “Pet therapy”
It’s a beautiful late summer Tuesday morning. Good Friend and I finish our checklists and head out for bagels in the A9. GF’s news pager buzzes. He ‘harrumphs’ and hands it to me. A plane has flown into the World Trade Center. We assume it must be some idiotic private pilot with a Cessna, whoContinue reading “Another Tuesday”
In the description of this blog, I refer to myself as a ‘firefighter, paramedic, train buff, family man.’ Most of my inspired writing lately has been fire/EMS related. A bit of self-indulgence, if you would: Beth began school today. Real, yellow-bus, lunch-in-a-big-room SCHOOL. I’m so proud. Where did all the time go? It seems likeContinue reading “Self indulgence”

It’s been a weekend of firsts here at Notes from Mosquito Hill. My first submission to The Handover was published, and I’ve started to see my first readers and comments from outside my own personal circle. Today brings my first guest post. I’d like you all to welcome my sister, Rescu82, to the Blogosphere. SheContinue reading “Impressions”
Like I need more to occupy my time. . . Yesterday Anita, Cricket and I hiked Mt. Willard. It was a nice day, but a bit hazy. At the top, we stumbled onto a Letterbox. This is basically like a geocache, but without the high-tech. It seems the hobby has been around the UK sinceContinue reading “New Hobbies”
. . .so little time to blog about it. In the past 9 days I’ve attended a parade with the Mack, been to the Swan Boats with Beth, been to the farm, run a speeder excursion, and worked 3 24s. Not to mention considering moving to NH. And back to work for another 24 tomorrow.
As a friend commented last week, it’s been two weeks of trains interrupted by work. Back on the 17th, we hosted our annual steamup with good attendance. I’ve been doing lots of work on the speeder, culminating in 3 major runs this past weekend. Thursday was the MEC Mountain Division from Fryeburg to the PortlandContinue reading “Trains and Speeders”
Ericka dragged me to Florida this week for a surprise getaway. Dragged, really. Kicking and screaming.:-) See? Three days, two nights at the Tween Waters Inn on Captiva Island. We had a cute cabin, a cute rental car, and a nice time. Have to do this again sometime.
