Week 53 – Voigtlander Bessamatic Deluxe
As week 53 marks the beginning of a new year, I’ve decided to return to my roots. Introduced in 1959, the Bessamatic was Voigtlander’s answer to the Zeiss Ikon Contaflex and the Kodak Retina Reflex. The Deluxe version debuted in 1962. It is a heavy, leaf-shutter SLR with interchangeable lenses and a Selenium match needle meter. […]

Sharing my Secrets – Part 3 – Thrift Stores
Part 1 – eBay Part 2 – Craigslist Before becoming a camera collector, I don’t think I had ever set foot in a thrift store. I disdained flea markets despite living 5 minutes from one of the best in New England. That has certainly changed. Like the rest of my methods, there are a few […]

Sharing my Secrets – Part 2 – Craigslist
Craigslist is currently my favorite method for collecting cameras. Read on to see why. On the surface, Craigslist is simple. It’s a modern electronic version of a newspaper classified ad. It’s so much more versatile, though. Collecting via eBay is quick and easy, but it’s impersonal. Ebay has made it incredibly simple to purchase a […]

Sharing my Secrets – Part 1 – eBay
or, “how I find all those $4 cameras.” Part 1: eBay As my collection has grown and my journey through the world of photography progresses, I have achieved a bit of a reputation as a bargain hunter. I primarily find them in three places: eBay, Craigslist, and thrift stores. I won’t go into a lot […]

Pentax ME Super – Week 49 results
From the moment I first handled a Pentax ME Super, I knew I wanted one. I was sold on its size and weight. In use, however, I’ve been disappointed. The camera reviewed here is actually my second example. The first was a cheap eBay dud. It happens, and it’s a risk I willingly take. At […]

Week 52 – Leica M6
As week 52 marks the end of my first year of 52 Cameras, I decided to close the loop with my other Leica. Introduced in 1984, the M6 was an evolutionary step in the rangefinder line which began with the M3 in 1954. Primary differences are a rewind crank instead of a knob, a quick-loading […]

ONDU Pocket Pinhole – results 2
For my second attempt with the ONDU, I used a roll of Fuji 400 color and a tripod. The results are much better. I also used the Pinhole Assist app on my phone to compute exposures. The winding is still a bit stiff, but I can live with that. From 2014-02-11 ONDU Pinhole From […]

Week 51 – Kodak Ektralite 10
Introduced in 1978, the Ektralite 10 was the flagship of Kodak’s 110 film point and shoot lineup. It featured a 25mm f8 lens with fixed focus from 5 feet to infinity. Shutter speed was fixed at 1/170, and the large internal flash ran on 2 AA batteries. Production ran until 1994. My example has a […]

Breaking News
If you read my post about Tuesday, you need to see the addendum. Yes, it’s broken. They call it a Snuff Box Fracture. I am out of action for at least six weeks. So now I’m watching it snow and catching up on Dexter on Netflix. Blogging may slow for a bit.

Deputy Chief Murphy
Mrs. Mack505 is a bit superstitious about February. Bad things seem to happen for her. I try not to be superstitious, but I do joke that Murphy must be at least a captain because he certainly outranks this lieutenant. Today I feel like he’s been promoted to deputy chief. We were supposed to go to […]
