I’ve written in the past about my white cloud. I try not to be superstitious, but I went through a long dry spell at work. Slow days, ‘no-hitters’, cancellations; It was nice for a while, then it was boring.

Recently my cloud has evaporated. I haven’t developed a black cloud yet, but I see sick people. Chest pain, respiratory, head bleeds, STEMIs, even a fair bit of trauma have all come my way. I’ve been able to do my job and feel like people need me. It’s been nice.

I don’t need a cloud, white or black. The blue skies are treating me very well.

About a year ago, Mrs Mack505 bought a used truck. It was in pretty good shape, but I knew it would need a new rear bumper. It just had that look about it. Shortly after she took delivery someone backed into the truck in a parking lot and revealed that the situation was worse than I’d thought.

It wasn’t a bumper. It was the idea of a bumper; chrome plating stretched over a lattice of rust.

I began to do some research. These bumpers aren’t cheap, although they do seem cheaply built. They all rust away, so there are none available from any local junk yards. I finally settled on a Peacemaker pipe bumper. It’s rugged, cool looking, and no more expensive than a chromed knock-off.

I got lazy and never placed the order. We just drove it.

This month the inspection came due, and I know it won’t pass with a rusty husk on the back. No problem, we’ll just buy the replacement now.

Six week back order. D’oh!

It was time for some redneck engineering. The resultant pressure treated contraption is ugly as sin, but it should be legal. It covers the brackets, displays the plate properly, and has no jagged edges.

And it should be going away in less than a month.

Duet

Friends since high school, their lives have orbited and intertwined for decades. War, marriages, children, careers; all have come and gone yet friendship remains.

Upstairs we dance the ballet. Compressions, airway, breathing, electricity. Three paramedics, four firefighters, and an EMT all choreographed around one person on the floor.

Downstairs a lone EMT does the real work as the curtain closes on a duet.

1/26 – The Howe is finally under cover in her new home. I need to finish telling the story, but it has a happy ending thus far. This one looks best with a retro filter.

1/27 – Just uphill from the Local Suburban ambulance bay, the floodlights interact with the tree branches in a spiderweb pattern. I’ve been trying to capture an image with little luck. It looks even more spectacular with a bit of rain or ice on the branches.

As mentioned previously, I’ve been shooting a bit on real film. I learned photography on a manual 35mm camera, shooting and developing my own film. Sometimes it’s fun to go back.

January 12 – At the firehouse. You don’t see folding controls very often, but even when folded these barely clear the doors.

January 13 – ALS

Shot on a Nikon FM2 with 50mm manual lens. Thanks to OldSchoolPhotoLab.com for developing and scanning for me. Not many folks can handle Tmax 400 any more.
